In Kenya, voracious stem borers destroy a significant part of the maize crop every year. The amount the pests leave will soon barely be enough to feed the country’s fast-growing population. By developing maize varieties capable of resisting these pests, the Insect Resistant Maize for Africa (IRMA) project hopes to help secure the future availability of the most important staple food for millions of Africans.
